[국내자료/학술지] 최지영. 2024. 학부 유학생의 온라인 기계번역 활용 양상 및 교수자의 인식 - 한국어 작문을 중심으로

[초록]

먼저 학부 유학생의 96.9%가 주기적으로 온라인 번역기를 활용하고 있었는데 대체로 온라인 번역기를 사전과 같이 단어를 검색하는 용도로 사용하고 있었다.학습자들은 온라인 번역기가 유용한 도구라고 생각하였으나 대부분 번역기의 결과를 크게 신뢰하지 않아 번역 결과를 검토하고 수정한다고 응답하였다.다음으로 온라인 기계번역 활용 양상이 숙달도별로 어떻게 다른지를 살펴본 결과 초급 학습자에 비해 중·고급 학습자들이 더 다양한 도구를 활용하는 것으로 나타났고,고급으로 갈수록 사용 빈도가 줄어들어 번역기에 대한 의존도가 점차 낮아진다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 초급 단계에서 주로 단어나 구 수준의 번역을 하고 그것을 그대로 작문에 활용하다가 중·고급 단계가 되면 언어 사용역에 맞는 표현이나 더 자연스러운 한국어 문장을 쓰기 위해 번역기를 활용하고 번역된 결과를 검토하고 수정하는 단계를 거치는 경우가 많았다.마지막으로 온라인 기계번역에 대한 교수자의 인식과 학습자의 실제 활용 양상에 상당한 차이가 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다.교수자들은 온라인 번역기 활용을 대체로 부정적으로 생각하고 있었으나 학습자들은 교수자가 생각하는 것만큼 번역기에 전적으로 의존하지는 않는 것으로 나타났고 교수자들도 번역기 사용을 허용하는 문제에 대해서는 유보적인 태도를 보였다. 따라서 학습자들이 번역의 결과를 비판적으로 바라보는 시각을 키울 수 있도록 교육하고 이를 효과적으로 활용할 수 있는 방법을 제시할 필요가 있을 것이다.

Findings reveal that 96.9% of students regularly use online translators, primarily for word lookup. Despite recognizing the tools’ utility, most students exhibit limited trust in the translation results, leading to output review and correction. Proficiency-based variations are also investigated, showing that intermediate and advanced learners use a broader range of tools, decreasing usage as proficiency advances, indicating a gradual reduction in reliance on the translator. Beginners mainly translate individual words or phrases for writing incorporation, while intermediate and advanced learners use the translator for more natural Korean sentences, engaging in review and correction. A notable disparity exists between instructors’ unfavorable perceptions of online machine translation and learners’ actual usage patterns. Contrary to instructors’ concerns, learners demonstrate a relatively modest reliance on online translators.
